International success is something that has come surprisingly easy for Swedish indie outfit The Sounds. Over the course of three records, the band has secured diverse, rabid fanbases the world over, from Australia to America. While lead singer Maja Ivarsson’s sexy legs (and participation in such projects as Cobra Starship) hasn’t hurt the band’s chances at making it globally, much of the band’s appeal lies in their ability to chart dynamic, synth-laden sonic landscapes over the course of all their albums. Something To Die For, the band’s latest concoction, shows no exception to this ability.

The album begins with “It’s So Easy,” a track laden with pulsing beats, synth hits, and Ivarsson’s strong vocalizations. Her strong voice continues into “Dance With The Devil,” an 80s-style pop track crafted for the modern hipster set. The album continues in a similar set, with much of the album constituting a marvelous, catchy cross with varying levels of anthemic dance pop and traditional indie music. At times, the anthemic dance pop takes the front seat, as in the rave-inducing, gang-vocal-laden “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and the soaring, arena-ready “The Best Of Me.” At other times, the indie tenets present in The Sounds are front and center, such as in the jumpy “Diana” and the stripped-down, raw “Wish You Were Here.” No matter which is prevalent, however, each track on the album is an excellent trove of indie gold.

Without a doubt, Something To Die For is excellent. The band perfectly balances the indie and the dancey, providing yet another excellent album for their catalog and many more catchy songs for their live set. The future is bright for The Sounds, and if they grow from this excellent record, their next effort will, without a doubt, be something to die for.
