You can’t go wrong with zombies. For ages, the cinematic and literary worlds have always warned of an apocalypse where the undead will rise to satiate their appetite for human flesh. The metalcore darlings in The Devils Wear Prada became fascinated by this concept and decided to write an EP, cleverly titled Zombie, providing their own twist on it. What TDWP has created is its best release to date. You can’t go wrong with Zombies.

Those familiar with TDWP will notice some new additions to the band’s overall sound and dynamic (including the lack of humorous song titles).  Plentiful sound effects add ambiance to the band’s personal horror story; the sounds of rusty chainsaws, empty shotgun casings and even a breaking news report lay the foundation for an eerie 25-minute epic. Piano interludes from keyboardist James Baney, whose dissonant chords remind listeners of gruesome tales of past, flesh out what will become an instant classic.

The members of TDWP have said that Zombie is their fastest and heaviest album so far and they made good on that claim. The band has retained its iconic attributes and also manages to improve upon them at the same time. “Anatomy” may be the most high-speed assault that TDWP has ever recorded while “Survivor” brings the pace to a grinding halt with gritty basslines and intricate guitar riffs. Lead vocalist Mike Hranica and guitarist/vocalist Jeremy DePoyster trade-offs are the best the band has ever produced. Hranica’s screams are higher than ever and sound great juxtaposed with his more familiar guttural growl. DePoyster’s vocals are also much more piercing, reaching Craig Owens-like levels. As a cohesive unit, TDWP is second to none.

Zombie has firmly planted The Devils Wear Prada at the top of the metalcore mountain and proves that the band is extremely versatile. If TDWP continues to progress from here, the result will be frightening (no pun intended).
