An emotional roller coaster across the solar system. At first glance, the previous statement is sure to leave some scratching their heads in wonder, but it is the perfect explanation of Lights' debut full-length album, The Listening. Born Valerie Poxleitner, Lights is the undeniable queen of electro pop, or more commonly described as “dream pop.” The Listening finds Poxleitner releasing her first true release, as her debut self-titled EP served as an appetizer to her intergalactic conquest. Through the course of this debut, Lights' soft delivery will sometimes tug at the heart strings only to do a complete turnaround on the next track, leaving some with a yearning to dance.
While electronic pop has seen it's fair share of hits (Owl City, The Postal Service) and misses (Hot Chip, LMFAO), Lights has avoided becoming a short circuit within the aforementioned genre with this release. Anyone who has taken the time to indulge themselves into the world of Poxleitner have witnessed her carefree attitude and uncanny charm, both of which seamlessly make their way into her music.
As previously mentioned, The Listening offers the listener a plethora of electronically infused emotions. The album begins with the mega-single “Saviour,” a poppy, keyboard driven song in which Lights turns a very dark emotional situation into an uplifting and positive message. “River” cuts deep with it's uplifting chorus, showcasing Lights' undeniable ability to craft pop masterworks with a high reliance on melody. Not letting her Canadian success and stardom get to her head, Lights has improved her writing tenfold since her 2008 debut, a trait in which many of her contemporaries fall short on. In a genre based on repetitive beats and loops, writing progression plays a huge factor in an artist's longevity. Lights is here to stay; The Listening will be a staple in any electro pop fanatic's collection for years to come.
Times are tough, let Lights take you away on an inexpensive intergalactic vacation.
