At face value, Lights’ self-titled EP breathes new life into the electro/pop genre by mixing a strong female vocalist with a textured electronic accompaniment. The project is Toronto, Canada native Valerie Poxleitner’s solo work in which she goes by her stage name Lights. The EP demonstrates the versatility of Lights in both vocal dexterity and song complexion.
From a vocal perspective, most would kill to have Lights’ soft highs and energetic sustains. She loves to show off her vocal range too, especially midway through the EP on “White.” The chorus lives in the high register and dances back down to the midrange by the end of it, coupled with a catchy melody and enough synth-pop to make the listener, in her own words, “feel happy-- not sexy happy but apple pie happy.”
Her first single, “Drive My Soul,” was enough to earn her a Juno award, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for best new artist. The award is certainly well deserved, as the excitement around Lights builds backed by this genre-defining 6-song EP. The content of Lights’ songs certainly fall within the electro genre, dripping of space and fantasy which is paralleled in her music video for “Drive My Soul” where Lights is in command of a very musical space ship.
Though the acclaim doesn’t stop at just the music, as Lights is certainly very vocal and in touch with her own fan base. A weekly video blog where Lights introduces her fans to all the important people in her life, including her pet tarantula and her World of Warcraft character, is so genuine that it makes her music seemingly more sincere. Be sure to follow her on twitter, where her pet insect JeremyTheBug is helping her keep relevant even while on Warped Tour.
