Labels are overrated. At least, labeling a band is overrated. Terms such as “pop,” “punk,” “indie,” and “rock” all serve their purpose, but they are such bland terms. Besides, what really decides which genre a band belongs in? That’s a rhetorical question, as any music fan can rattle of a dozen reasons why a certain band is thrown in to a certain genre. However, there are bands that also create music that can be put in to different genres, making an amalgamation of genres inevitable. Take Dayton, Ohio’s Let’s Get It. Upon first listen to their debut LP Masters of the Universe, the term “pop” easily comes to mind. Let’s dig a little deeper.

While Masters of the Universe is a “pop” record, there are more elements at play. Songs such as Keep It Up,” and “We Don’t Care,” and “Tonight Never Ends” show that the band can craft catchy songs that could easily be the soundtrack at a local nightclub. However, tracks such as “Audacity of Dope,” “Dirty, Dirty Mess,” and “A Closer Reference” show that the band can also provide some substance in the form of driving pop rock.

Vocalist Joe Gilford pulls his best Patrick Stump impression in “We Don’t Care,” singing “We don’t care / if the system’s bumping loud / Let them stare / Never let them turn you down / I don’t mind / Being second best to no one / told ‘em once / This time we’ll show them.” The rest of the band, guitarists Tyler Smyth and Chris Lairmore, bassist Taylor Foiles, and drummer Kevin Hammond, get to show off their skill on the album’s title track, “Masters of the Universe,” with Hammond keeping the rhythm while Smyth and Lairmore provide the riffs that drive the track. “Glow In The Dark” melds synth-pop with the driving pop, which works very well with the vocals provided by Gilford. The album is not perfect, however. As with all pop releases, the lyrics are the biggest downfall, as they tread the familiar paths of girls and partying.

Some would call the meshing of genres found on Masters of the Universe an identity crisis, but for Let’s Get It, it works. Mixing synth-pop with straight forward pop rock, and even a little R&B, provides the background for the summer. There’s a reason Let’s Get It were recently called Buzzworthy on MTV. Whether they’re a guilty pleasure or the next big thing, Let’s Get It have put together a solid debut album, and one that is sure to keep you dancing all summer long.
