Disco on dopamine; string-laden and groove-centric sure, but Blue Songs is more than just a curiously appropriate album title; the words are seemingly draped across the backs of Hercules and Love Affair as they bear their respective weight. From wherever the fuck ever they have acquired it from. Strangely happy amidst some serious sogginess (“Boy Blue” being the clammiest) the New York based group take their soul-searching straight to the dance floor helping Blue Songs combat its disappointing lulls. Whereas Hercules and Love Affair (2008) was a kaleidoscope of Seventies Disco sheen seen through the eyes of devotees of Chicago House Blue Songs finds the band demonstrating a similar ethos supplementing New-Wave and Post-Punk for Disco music. Their second album, decidedly metallic musically, coincidentally relies on live instrumentation more significantly; which in an unfortunate turn, is an un-doing for a band who bent synth lines into radiant, flowing landscapes. Instead implementing their synthesizers on a quest of sorts for a different facet of glory (DJ Heroics) the band misplaces its ability to transport the past into a present setting, instead sounding weirdly antiquated. Though not in a dusty, over-worn sense—they handle themselves with a regal attention to detail—more so an interesting take on a not-so-fresh concept well past its prime.

To chock up Blue Songs as just House-by-way-of-New-Wave is most certainly serving the record a slight, as songs like the beat-heavy “My House,” the woozy “Painted Eyes” and joyous “Falling” adhere religiously to the string-laden, hook-sopping, dangerously-catchy policy Hercules and Love Affair set with their debut. Still most of Blue Songs sounds like it came stumbling, half-cocked in the early hours straight from some hot, dingy basement club in late-80s Chicago. Sacrificing a certain charm their music possessed for playing-homage to heroes of past in lieu of highlighting some less fortunate but equally as deserving beat-connoisseur. And while the presence of Antony Hegarty and Nomi Ruiz are sorely missed, Aerea Negrot and Shaun Wright hold up well under the constant pressure leveled a top them by ring-leader Andy Butler and his, at times, prodding beats. While Butler has been quoted many times as stating his desire to keep Hercules’ vocal duties rotational Blue Songs overall sense of malaise is not rooted in the performance of its vocalists. The stripped down, House-heavy sound he and DJ/Vocalist Kim Ann Foxman showcase here just possesses less between its layers of distorted womp and bleeping synthesizers. Blue Songs is a bit like diet iced tea: you know what you are getting really is not all that terrible but you could have had it so much better.
