Former JamisonParker member Jamison Covington dabbled in the softer side of rock with E For Explosion’s debut Reinventing the Heartbeat, but that is not the same Jamison heard in the new EP Hold Grudges Not Hands. As the title implies, what listeners find is a corrosive and abrasive shot of Jamison’s newfound emotions, careening about a hateful digression of romance and relationships sure to make the listener feel a little bit better about their love life.

The first track “Cool Kids” is a slow climb that bridges the EP with Reinventing, but from the very first line, we find that it is not the atmospheric shoegazing E For Explosion we used to know (“I’m buried alive again /six feet deep beneath the bend/ wrapped in sheets and stained in red/ tomorrow night we play this game again”). The rest of the track doesn’t avert much from this pattern. The next track “P.S. I’m Dead” has a very electropopy drumbeat, accompanied with the chorus “hey hey, little thorn in my side, hey hey, little devil in knee-highs”. To beat the horse to a pulp, the track “Blankets and Blonde Hair” shines  the ignorant hate for the opposite sex the brightest: “you make it hard to breathe/you're gonna be the death of me/you barely even know me and you're gonna be the death of me”.

Despite the dismally loathing message of the EP, it speaks volumes of Jamison’s ability to blend happy-go-lucky rhythms with the “depressed dumpee” lyrics. To take the boppy tunes at face value would cause one to mistake this EP for another pop rock band singing about summer love. That is definitely not the case here, and yet there is room in many a heart for this kind of music; a bittersweet triumphant outcry to all who have felt the bitter sting of a lost love. E For Explosion gets the message across in an unconventional and surprisingly pleasing way, which is why the short-but-unsweet Hold Grudges Not Hands stands out as one of the better EP's of the year.
