Since his days on Noggin’s hit series, Degrassi, Aubrey Grahm has brought a new luster to the music industry. He joined the select few rappers whose rhymes have emotional weight and deep meaning, rather than nonsensical lyrics. Although his pseudonym has changed, Drake still shines as brightly as Jimmy did. He has been a huge success under Lil Wayne’s Young Money label, and uses him as a huge inspiration for his work. His previous mixtapes, including Comeback Season and So Far Gone, shot his popularity through the roof, making many of his songs chart toppers. While his newest album Thank Me Later stays true to his classic sound, Drake reaches beyond his style and takes influences from other genres to create some unique, never-before-heard tones that take his album to another level.

Thank Me Later gives Drake’s music a new dimension-- taking it from classic rap to a new hip hop with more modern influences. His song “Karaoke” opens with a tribal snare beat that carries the track, transforming the smooth melody into a more dynamic sound. Drake also draws from the newly-popular house genre to put together the song “Show Me a Good Time”, as the back beat is heavy on the techno sound. Thank Me Later contains these special little surprises that add to the diversity of Drake’s sound and artistry.

Also influencing the swagger of Thank Me Later are the artists featured in many of the tracks of this album. Other than the predictable Young Money features, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, Drake employs the sounds of an array of artists, including the angelic vocals of Alicia Keys and the bold tone of Jay-Z. These artists help in expanding the range of styles featured in Thank Me Later, as the Alicia Keys R&B culture comes to play in “Fireworks,” while allowing Drake the opportunity of working with more mature artists. These features also influence his lyrics, as he sings of his love for Nicki Minaj and her “verses [that] turn [him] on” in “Miss Me.” The fusion of the styles of other artists with his own puts Drake at the risk of being unoriginal, but he seamlessly pulls it off.

The unfortunate truth of this album is that the wonder described above only applies to a few of the tracks on this tape. The rest of the songs are mediocre, with no special beats or lyrics and following the same style as his previous work. “Ransom”, brings nothing new to the industry and has an unrecognizable intro. All of Drake’s songs are catchy and great to listen to, but as for depth and progression in sound, he’s taking it one small step at a time. However, in reality small steps are better than none. Overall, nicely done Drizzy.
