If one was to mention the name Gabe Saporta, a few things may come to mind. A bright star in the pop punk scene, Saporta provided vocal and bass duties for the highly influential band Midtown. Releasing such memorable albums as Save The World, Lose The Girl and Living Well Is The Best Revenge the band still remains a staple of any true pop punk listener's library. Fast forward to 2009 and the release of Cobra Starship's third full length outing, the appropriately titled Hot Mess.

The mention of Saporta nowadays draws an interesting mixture of reactions. Sure, people still love the guy for his work in Midtown, and the first two Cobra Starship albums weren't necessarily terrible, but his actions prior to the release of the new album are unavoidable. His first misstep came in the form of befriending the three whores of the scene apocalypse, more commonly know as the Millionaires.

When news first broke of the friendship, many played it off as Gabe just playing a joke, until he publicly defended them (and their music) on his blog, and even though he's said that they are playing into a dying scene, his actions are still inexcusable. Seeing as how this review has become more of a rant, let's move on to the album.

Hot Mess has proved to be one of the most cocky, mind numbing, and emotionally inhibited releases of the past few years. One of the most frequent miscues throughout the album are the lyrics, which tend to either be downright annoying or completely devoid of any meaning whatsoever. A perfect example of this can be found on the song “You're Not In On The Joke” which finds Saporta spitting lyrical greatness (sarcasm) such as “I'm super sweet sealed with a kiss..My ass is awesome, so smile when you kiss it.” Deep. The track is salvaged within the last 30 seconds by Pete Wentz, who offers very Take This To Your Grave-ish screams to bring the song to a close. The lone standout track falls on the first single from the album “Good Girls Go Bad,” a dance influenced rocker which features Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester. This song is huge, but the recycled theme grows old after a few listens.

A majority of the album sees the band mixing with a multitude of dancey and techno influenced tokens, but they completely shy away from anything with substance, relying purely on glitter and glam. Hot Mess is the epitome of tasteless and irritating music and does little to provoke any emotion. One can only take solace in the fact that Saporta has found happiness in this current affair. After all, it's apparent that he just wants to dance. In regards to this outing, I'll remain a wallflower.

Cobra Starship are a pop, punk, electro band, originally created by Midtown bassist/lead vocalist Gabe Saporta as a side project. They are perhaps best known for their song "Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)," which was included on the soundtrack of the action film Snakes on a Plane, as well as their hit single "Good Girls Go Bad" which featured Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester and peaked at 7 of the Billboard 100. ... read more
