Plain and simple, no beating around the bush, no BS- Carnifex just isn’t that good. They aren’t that bad, but more importantly, they really aren’t that good. In their defense, however, that much can be said about the entire mind numbing, ignorance generating, hate inducing, cookie cutter scene that is, the “deathcore” genre. Birthing out of, or more appropriately speaking, aborting out of California in 05 (the Mecca and heyday of US deathcore), Carnifex may have influenced an abundance of exchangeable bands, but their third and latest release of, Hell Chose Me, does nothing special to differentiate themselves from the pack. Be it Suicide Silence, Job for a Cowboy, or the local angst- ridden, death-oriented band that plays at the Elks Lodge in your town.

Hell Chose Me offers the same repetitive tactics that all their previous releases offered: Sludgy breakdowns, blast beats, relentless double bass, deafening distortion, and a range of hateful screams shrieking equally hateful messages. With that said, those who enjoyed their past works (or generic deathcore in general), will likely be pleased with this hellish release. But lets be serious, the value of their music is not in the “music” at all. The scene and sound alike is about being the heaviest, most bloodthirsty and aggressive group of pissed off males out there. Though certain songs may show a glimmer or leave an echo of some flashy guitar riffage and melody, deathcore’s inherent combination of angry motives doesn’t necessarily make for insightful, instrumentally driven music.

So, what will Hell Chose Me leave listeners? Aside from migraines, night terrors, a shortened life expectancy, and a dimmer outlook on reality, victims will receive no lasting value from this CD. If you’re already keen to this style, I guess you’ll be satisfied. But this band or release will most likely not garner them the praise of competent, respectable music followers. Accurately enough, when it comes to Carnifex, hell did choose them.
