Melbourne twee-pop troupe Architecture In Helsinki are if nothing else interesting. Hitting international airwaves and touring well past the confines of their native Australia has done little to curb their minimalist ambitions. Or well as minimalist as five people playing over thirty instruments can be. Still Moment Bends, their fourth album, is an understated-dance-off of concentrated synth-pop not too unlike that of an early-era Stars collaborating with The Rapture. Distinctly more mature than their dainty albeit hefty debut Fingers Crossed (2003) and passively-solidified compared to the ramshackle brilliance of In Case We Die (2005) or the snooze-inducing Places Like This (2007); Moment Bends may be the most traditional pop album the band has made. Which is not to say the album is poor, it certainly possesses copious hooks—a problem that plagued Places Like This—and is an enjoyable listen. The record's issues arise in its inability to differentiate itself from the crowd. It certainly sounds somewhat unique for Architecture In Helsinki, yet one cannot help but be reminded of other, better songs while engulfed in Moment Bends.

This derivative nature the album is so proud of is a complicated beast. On the one hand the text-book pop, performed with class and care, is certainly more a successful play than the shitty folk-synth-maelstrom of their previous record. This aspect also leads a certain level of weightlessness to the songs. “W.O.W.” while an engrossing electro-pop ditty is only about two synthy-bleeps away from a Heart-era Stars song that Amy Milian would be proud of. “YR Go To” and “I Know Deep Down” play like Rapture songs that were just too sugary. While “Everything's Blue” totes some straight-up MGMT-esque disco-funk a la “Electric Feel.” And granted each of these aforementioned tracks can hold their own--at least concerning the desire to re-listen—yet after the reckless (and extremely successful) experimentation that was once this band's calling-card; something just feels lacking. Even as “Desert Island,” “Escapee” and “Contact High” are arresting exercises in great synth-pop and “B4 3D” is an enchanting slice of psychedelic-ambience; it is hard to feel like Moment Bends is not a much needed cleanse after a four-year stretch between full-lengths. Or well, in lieu of the successes of their past, we can only hope this record is the needed reset. As this moment bends a bit too indistinguishably to keep it from briskly breezing on by. Shame really for a band that once had so much staying power.
